Handmade Hope: Indego Africa

AbBarsmaller

Indego Africa Fair Trade

Running a handmade shop adds so much passion to my life. Adrian and I were talking just a few weeks ago and he told me how much joy it gave him to watch me tap into that passion. Running a business and creating is in my veins. It is life-giving and empowering.

For most of us Westerners, starting a business is within reach. A leap of faith, a risk, yes, but possible. Attainable.

Transport yourself for a moment with me to the small town of Kayonza, Rwanda. Rwanda, the most densely populated African nation, that in 1994 was ravaged by a genocide leading to upwards of 500,000 killings over just 100 days.

Indego Africa artisans

Nearly 16 years later, 25 women from Kayonza banded together to take a risk with Indego Africa, a design-driven social enterprise connecting African women artisans with global markets and education.

When they started, the Kayonza women “had no bank accounts, no place to work, no equipment, and no specialized training.

And the women had something else in common: each of them a mother. And not just a mother, but a mother to a child born of rape from the 1994 genocide. The physical and psychological consequences of their reality, coupled with a lack of very basic resources like clean water and adequate food, well, I would say those factors put running a successful business out of reach, wouldn’t you?

indego-africa-3-a734658304

Yet today, those women sew their hearts out. But not in harsh factory conditions or for unfair wages. No, they are part of one of 11 such Indego cooperatives that “lifts women-owned businesses in Rwanda toward sustainable economic independence through access to markets and education.

Indego recently provided me a gift card to shop their products and share with you.

Wearing: Banana Hoop Earrings ($15)

The hoop earrings were made by the artisans of the Twiyubake Family cooperative, where genocide widows work side-by-side with the wives of imprisoned génocidaires who killed their families, fostering “unity and reconciliation through economic community.” Well if that isn’t grace…

I cannot express the beauty and value of wearing an item that represents a story of redemption.

Indego Africa has an eye for design, too, and is making waves with cutting edge collaborations with brands like J.Crew and Nicole Miller.

One Indego artisan described what her work means to her:

”I can now take care of all my basic household needs and I no longer have to turn away from my children in shame because I cannot provide for them. I can send all six of them to school, and give them the chance for a better future.” – Claudine, 45

Textile Patch Notecards ($20)

One of these notecards will definitely be framed somewhere in our house. They are beautiful!

I know you hear me talk about fair trade often here on the blog. But are you starting to see the beauty of it? The physical beauty of a well-made item, and also, the beauty of a product that means opportunity and hope for a woman that would never have known it otherwise?

Opportunity.

Dignity.

Hope.

Oh friends, it’s a beautiful thing.

Please take a minute to head over to shop Indego Africa’s beautiful summer line now.

Leave a comment + let us know what your favorite item is!

Summit Recap: Adoption + Orphan Care Resources (+ weekly link up)

My heart and mind continue to process all I soaked in at CAFO’s Orphan Summit a few weeks back. I have several posts in draft and many topics I want to tackle and share with you. Despite all that was swirling around in my mind, I felt led to write a post for the waiting mamas when I came back.

This sweet little recap video will give you a glimpse into our weekend (+ perhaps entice you to make it there next year!):

So what I would really love to know, if you would be so kind as to leave a comment and share, is what questions do YOU have about orphan care, adoption, Summit 9, the Christian Alliance for Orphans, etc etc. Please do let me know if you have a genuine interest in a certain area. Go ahead and leave a comment below, k? We’ll get the discussion going.

For today, I wanted to compile just a few key resources to share with you. These are huge topics, so obviously this is by no stretch a comprehensive list. I simply wanted to give you a place to start. I believe there are readers here all across the board, from fellow adoptive parents and adoptive parents-to-be to, to passionate orphan care advocates, to those who have never really considered adoption or caring for orphans. I hope this post will offer resources for you wherever you find yourself on that continuum.

Our week was bittersweet, with the passing of Adrian’s grandfather, a godly man that served in ministry as a pastor nearly his entire life. We know he is in glory this morning!

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17)

The blessing in our week came with my mom, affectionately known as Grammy to our little ones, in town for a visit.

She was able to do life with us and even take Sis on a field trip to the greenhouse.  Mother’s Day was extra sweet with mom in town AND I got to go to a tea party with my handsome big man. Heart. Melted.

Here are some pics from our week

For the Weary, Waiting Mama

Hope for Adoptive Moms

My time at last week’s Summit9 conference has my head and heart full. There is so much information to process, so much to share. Yet, today, I have a feeling I’m not supposed to share information and thoughts on orphan justice, global orphan care, creating church-based orphan ministry, or the ethics of international adoption just yet.

waiting

Over the past few days, I’ve sensed that same ache for encouragement my friend had expressed.  So today I offer a little hope to those sweet ones in the midst of this weary, sometimes discouraging wait.

Hope for Adoptive Moms

The wait is not worthless.

In fact, I am sure that God works in the wait. To refine. To allow us time to lean in and lean on Him. I’ve shared this quote several times before, and I think it’s worth sharing once again as we remind our tender hearts that He has not forgotten us:

As you wait, tell yourself again and again that you have not been singled out. Remind yourself that you are part of a vast company of people who are being called to wait. Reflect on the biblical story. Abraham waited many years for his promised son. Israel waited 420 years for deliverance from Egypt, then another 40 years before they could enter the land God had promised them. God’s people waited generation after generation for the Messiah, and the church now waits for his return. The whole world groans as it waits for the final renewal of all things that God has promised. In ministry, it is vital to understand that waiting is not an interruption of God’s plan. It is his plan. And you can know this as well: the Lord who has called you to wait is with you in your wait. He hasn’t gone off to do something else, like the doctor you’re waiting to see. No, God is near, and he provides for you all that you need to be able to wait. (Paul Tripp)

You are not alone.

As we trust He has not abandoned us in the waiting, we cling to the truth that we are not alone. God himself is with us in our wait. And still, there is an earthly ache of loneliness. Friend, it is lonely. Even when there are people around us who have been down the adoption road or understand on some level, no one is walking our walk, no one waiting our wait. But we have to know we weren’t meant to walk it alone. We must let people in, share our stories, and be vulnerable. Let us not be frustrated that no one understands what we’re going through (frustrating as it may be!); instead, let’s gently open the door to our hearts. So just as we draw near to the Lord in the wait, we lean in on the body, on our sisters, in the wait.  We trust and claim and declare that we are not alone.

He is still God.

Along the road of international adoption, a thousand things can go wrong. A thousand questions can stir in our hearts and minds. A thousand reasons lead us to doubt and question. But we rest in this truth: Jesus is good and He is God and that will never change.  Halleluiah!  Our job is not to figure out every detail, but simply to trust Him.  We know when we can’t tell right from left or up from down, He knows. He is unfailing, unchanging, unshaken. Sovereign. Holy. Good. And? Nothing, nothing, nothing can separate us from that good news:

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)

He fulfills His promises.

Perhaps not in our timing. Perhaps not in our preferred method of doing business. Perhaps, painfully, not even this side of heaven. But God is always faithful to His word. ALWAYS. We can trust in that.

And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised. Hebrews 6:15

If you are a mama waiting to adopt your little one, what has sustained you during the painful wait?

What is it that you bring you the most encouragement during the wait? Are you waiting in a different way, not related to adoption? Share your heart with us in the comments.

by grace alone,

lauren

sharing with some of these friends

That They Would See What You See

email to Tiffany

I’ve shared in the past that there have been moments, days, and seasons when I seriously question if blogging is worth my time and energy.  Many hours and lots of heart pour into this little online space.

And while blogging can be a beautiful thing, it doesn’t take much for a good thing to turn to idolatry.

idolatry: excessive devotion to, or reverence for, some person or thing

And I’ve walked that line.

But by grace, every time I’ve considered walking away or closing shop, doors open that clearly beckon me to keep going, press on, and walk through.

You might recall me sharing recently why I was hoping, praying, pleading, and begging to go to Summit 9, the Christian Alliance for Orphan’s global conference on adoption and orphan advocacy. Well, my little plea was heard and accepted by some miracle, and I won a trip to the conference.

Yes, I’m headed to Nashville, y’all. (Today, in fact!)

Another open door. Another whisper from my Maker to press forward, to share the stories, to engage in this funny little blogging world for the purpose of a great big real world that’s hurting for hope.

Perhaps God’s most clear open door to keep writing came last October, via World Help’s invitation to join them in Guatemala and blog for Operation Baby Rescue. The opportunity was beyond my heart’s greatest desires.

And the fruit of that experience is still being reaped and multiplied. In January, 600 youth from across our state raised money for a clean water well for the people of Guatemala, a well which a team from our church will dedicate this summer.  I’ll be joining my husband and 24 other students and adults from to go back to Zacapa. The fruit trees continue to bloom.

Initially, I really questioned whether I was supposed to be on our church’s team. Of course, I wanted to go to hold my Jenri and Diego, and to be back in the place that holds a piece of my heart.

But I wanted to be prayerful and discerning, too, and be sure that both Adrian and me going was right for our family. In the midst of those swirling questions, I sent this email to my girl Tiffany, way back in January:

email to Tiffany

And sweet Tiffany responded with these thoughtful words:

Tiff email 2

I honestly cry looking back over that email.

I know it’s so very simple, but my friend’s words here, they speak purpose to my heart, life, and even to the blog:

Share Your Story

Now I see how those words articulate just what this place, this writing thing is all about.

For all the ways the internet is used for bad, I’m grateful for the ways God’s channeled it for good in my life. I think of Joseph in the Bible, who, though given every opportunity to get wrapped up in lust, lies, and hatred, declared to his brothers in the wake of their deception:

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. – Genesis 50:20 (read the story)

And I think of you.

Yes, YOU, reading here today.

I think of the seeds and stories planted in your heart, friend.

It may not be through writing or blogging, but most definitely, you are purposed to tell stories.

You are purposed to tell a story.

To speak life.

To walk along your friends, parents, neighbors, and children to help them see what you see, but also, to see what they see.

This is why I write.

It’s about you.

It’s about taking you with me: into the dusty villages of Zacapa, over contaminated rivers, along the winding roads of adoption, across the ocean to Congo., into dark corners of the widows’ basement in Syria, and yes, even through the sometimes murky waters of motherhood.

It’s about them.

The Jenris and Delmys and Noes.

The orphans.

The widows.

The mamas.

The women living brave.

We must tell their stories.

It’s about Him.

He wrote the book and pens your story even now.

Let Him in?

Give Him the glory?

What stories has God asked you to share? Who are the people you’re called to enter in the mess with?

Ultimate Homemaking Bundle + H&H Link Up

It’s no secret I am not the world’s best homemaker.

But I do try. Some areas are more enjoyable in my book, while others, well, in other areas let’s say I’m thankful for grace and for a little inspiration from women much more gifted at homemaking than I.

This week is a good week for us not-so-gifted homemakers, and really for all women who manage their homes (as in any woman, whether she works at home, stays at home full time, or works outside the home, we’re homemakers if we manage our homes, as my girls at Intentional by Grace point out). It’s a good week because for 6 days only, 97 of the web’s greatest resources on the topic are available in one happy, ultimate ebook bundle.

The Mom Inside // from the archives

The Mom Inside

The mom I want be, she is a beautiful, courageous, (mostly) fearless woman.

She is wise to the needs of her children and relentless at loving them.

Not perfect.

Not pretending.

Not guilt-ridden.

Not counterfeit nor clone.

Not even free of lost tempers, or occasional raised voices, or mistakes.

No, because she is a flawed woman, drenched in grace, yet confident that every quirk and every trait and each facet of her character is the design of a Wonderful Maker.

She knows herself well, the ugly and the pretty, the strengths and the faults, all the mediocre in between, and she is trying to be that person well.

Confidence leads to courage to love relentlessly.

That confidence leads to courage:

to love relentlessly;

to make the hard choices;

to give in to grace and reject fear.

So she draws boundaries to guard little hearts.

She sets up home to nurture and cultivate and build and send.

She hugs and laughs and tickles and snuggles her littles.

She is driven to make home organized, stay on top of the schedules, keep up with laundry, and keep the peace,

but when it comes right down to it, she’s happy to let things slide;

to let go (some of the time) of clean and organized, of time for self, of time for work, for the sake of one more bedtime story,

one more big push of the swing for the one that begs “higher, Mommy!”,

one more stroll around the neighborhood hand-in-hand with a little man that carries the world on his shoulders.

She chooses to be more than to do.

She’s in there. That Mama.

And she’s worth finding.

They, those littles, need her to be uncovered and awake.

Benefits to Buying a New Home | #StartFreshBuyNew

New Home Benefits

As a little girl, I always dreamed of growing up and living in an old Victorian house with a big porch, winding staircases, and charm up the wazoo. When Adrian and I began house hunting two years ago, we found ourselves deciding between two faves: one was an old, two story brick house, oozing with charm and character. The other, a newly built ranch spec home with a functional layout.

home

You know the little girl (and DIYer) in me longed for the charm and the project. But the more we considered the options, the more we knew the new home was a better fit for our family. I took some convincing, but several months after moving in I remember looking at my husband one night and telling him (to his ego’s delight), “You were right.”

Now that we’ve been here two years, I thought I’d share a few benefits of living in a new build for those who may be in the home buying process.

New Home Benefits

Benefits of Buying New

1) Practical and functional spaces, built for modern families.  This was the number one reason we chose the house we did. It is a simple ranch style house, modest in size, yet the space lends itself well to spending time together as a family.  A large finished basement which serves as our play room and family room really sold the house for us.

basement our basement, before we moved in & pre-carpet

The older home we considered had comparable square footage, but it was broken up in somewhat odd ways that weren’t functional for our family’s needs.

2) We traded to-do lists for want-to-do lists.  As much as I love following renovations on HGTV or dreaming up how fun it would be to restore an old house, the reality is that we ain’t handy folk. We’ve spent zero dollars on renovations or fixing broken stuff. My projects list for the house involves painting rooms, hanging curtains, and rearranging furniture (a lot).

3) Lower utilities and lower overall costs.  This one piggybacks on number two in that as of yet we truly have not spent any money on must-do repairs. The house is also more energy efficient, which lends to lower costs. Our dear friends next door live in an older home and moved in about the same time we did.  Before we even hit winter time that first year, our neighbors politely inquired about our electric bill because theirs had exceeded $250 with hardly any use of heat. Our electric bill that fall was under $100 a month for probably double the square footage in house. It’s a difference we feel in the budget.

I am still a lover of old homes, and if you live in one, I’m honestly jealous. (Can I come visit you?) But there are so many reasons why a new home was a great fit for us. For more information on buying and building a new home, check out BHI’s Start Fresh Buy New website, full of tips and advice on buying new.

Do you have any tips based on your experience with new or old homes that you would share with friends that might be in the market?
