As a whole, our church family is entering a season of focus on relationships. Life groups will all be working through the same relationally focused curriculum. From the pulpit, we’ll hear similar messages on what it means to be in relationship with each other, and how to do it well in the way God commands.
Yesterday was the introduction message to this season, and man, our leader wasted no time. He cut right to the real stuff and opened with this passage:
“Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22: 34-40
Jesus changes things. He tells us that loving God is, essentially, not all there is to it. We are to love our neighbor, too.
