Guatemala 2013 // post written by Adrian Mills
I feel like I’m still dreaming.
The dream began about a year ago. My good friend, Matt and I had the responsibility and opportunity to plan our annual winter retreat. Over 600 students from 25 different churches would come together for a weekend in January 2013, and it was our task to make the whole thing happen (well, at least to get the ball rolling).
We sat eating chips and salsa, and scribbling notes on a napkin. “What would be the vision for the weekend?” We asked ourselves. “What was the one thing we wanted students to hear from God?”
We had prayed, we had wrestled with it over and over again, but in this moment, scribbled on a napkin we felt like God gave us the dream in one word: NOW.
What if we could help this generation of young people see that God has a plan for their lives in this moment? And what if they are not the generation to sit by on the sidelines, waiting for their chance to be used, to make a difference? What if their time, their opportunity was NOW? We began dreaming and scribbling some more.
What if students came to the weekend not just to worship, to hear an incredible message, but what if we actually challenged them to do something, to take action NOW?
And so the dream was born: we wanted to fund a clean water well.
Not just fun, nachos, dodgeball, and friends, but actually sacrificing in a tangible way…
so others may have life.
It is estimated that nearly 1 billion people in the world today do not have access to clean water. 1 BILLION. As little as $10 can provide one person with water for life.
The weekend came and students responded. Our $5,000 goal was big, but we kept praying, kept asking God to help us be a part of something NOW that would make a difference.
Students gave, and gave, and gave…
over $8,000 was collected. Our God is so big.
Fast forward several months and I am sitting on an airplane. 24 adults and students are on our way to see this clean water well dedicated. Taking such a long Journey to a tiny village in the mountains of Guatemala would seem silly to most, but not on this day.
Today we get the chance to see a little piece of heaven on earth. To see what can happen when a generation truly believes that they are called NOW. I will stand with some of the same students who gave sacrificially. We will see not just statistics, but the faces of men, women, and children, and in that moment…it will be worth it all.
Something beautiful happens when we let ourselves dream. When we let ourselves imagine what could happen if we obey God and surrender to His will.
My perspective changes.
My heart changes.
My world changes.
And I don’t want to stop. This dream is just too good.
