Dearest Virginia:
You know I like you, right? You know I’ve come a long way from our first meeting many years ago. Dare I say, I’ve come to love you.
But sometimes love hurts, so let’s have an honest little chat, ok? I just have to get this off my chest. I’ll feel better if we just get it all out there, put it all on the table.
Ok, brace yourself, I’m trying to be gentle about this, but, here’s the thing, Virginia, THIS is not grounds for a snow day:
[exhibit A: actual photo of our front yard, taken just a few moments ago, on a real live snow day]
Yes, Virginia, there was a little dusting of snow this morning.
A little.
Actually, I’m not sure this even qualifies as a dusting. A little whisper of snow. A little hint.
I know what you’re going to say, Miss Virginia.
I’ve heard it all before.
You are going to tell me about how big the county is; how when school is cancelled, it is for the safety of all the kids in the county, and some live nearly all the way back in those there mountains. And way back in the hollars, as they tell me, though despite my efforts to understand this Southern concept, I really don’t understand in the least, nor have I ever passed by, or seen, or known of, or been in an actual hollar.
So I’m sorry, Virginia, I’m really struggling to buy your story.
See that road? Nothin. Nada. Not the faintest lick of snow stuck.
Do you know, when I was a kid……….

Yeah, where I come from we……
You know what the worst part is?
The kids are so excited.
SO. EXCITED.
Not just because they don’t have school, but because they don’t have school because of this illusive snow. They are dying to play in it. But the thing about it is:
THERE. IS. NO. SNOW!
It’s heartbreaking for these little folk.
I’m trying, Virginia, really I am, but today? It’s feeling a little bit on the side of crazy.
Until next time (which will likely be sometime in the next week with the next threat of a hint of a rumor of a flake of fluff), Virginia, hope your people are nice and safe and warm inside on this wintry day.
Signed,
The Confused Northerner

seriously cracking up over here and feeling your pain in a big way!! haha I live in Virginia Beach – same thing – they cancel school if there’s no in the forecast!! We don’t even have to see a single flurry before the whole city shuts down!!! Crazy. crazy. crazy. Of course, this is coming from a California girl so I can’t say that I know the difference. ;)

It’s a wild phenomenon, Lauren. I’m definitely missing something here… I’m waiting for someone to say “Just Kidding!” but they never do. Trying to embrace it :)

This made me laugh. Out loud. I have declared a snow day today-though we are home schooled. It’s more because we have a lot of loose ends to tie up from our trip, and we only got back after midnight THursday morning. But we did get quite a bit of snow last night. Probably 4 inches. I just ran 3 miles in it. Makes a great difference where you are from, doesn’t it.

Well I say 4 inches of snow is grounds for a snow day, Hippie Girl :) I need to catch up on your trip… saw your post about what you learned on your missions trip, but missed where you guys went. Perspective is everything!

I grew up in Wisconsin and have lived all over the place as a military wife. I literally laughed out loud when reading your post! I have lived in VA a couple of times and will be moving back there this summer. I, too, do not understand the VA snow days!! Although I do have to say that the last time we moved there 8 years ago, the day after we arrived it snowed 11 inches. Everything shut down and we had no furniture, no food, nothing! So we went out (cause we CAN actually drive in the snow) and found a random McDonalds open and got some food! Lol. Out here in Seattle, WA last summer, I was cracking up at the weather advisories cause it was going to reach 80 degrees!! People were staying inside with their shades drawn and drinking lots of water!! Lol, it’s all about perspective!

Oh Heather that is too funny. You’re so right, just all about what you know & where you’re coming from (literally). 11 inches would definitely shut this place down! What a crazy day for you to move! Thanks so much for stopping by :) -l
Oh this is hilarious Lauren! It makes this girl from Canada laugh out loud. That’s grounds for a snow day???? Really?!

So ridiculous, right!? It’s absurd. “But the roads are icy…” Yeah, ok. thanks for stopping by Chantel!
This made me laugh. But after two days of no school where I live, I must say I wish I could send my kids out to play in “your snow” because our 9 inches of snow makes them cold after 15 minutes. So they have been inside waayyy too long.
I guess that’s the other side of the coin, Rachel! Cooped up kids in the winter gets old fast! We managed OK and they did play outside a bit, just without the snow ;)

So funny! This Alabama girl thinks you got plenty of snow for a snow day!!!
Girl, what snow!? ;)
that’s not a snow day! hahaha! oh, VA. come to MI & we’ll show you a real snow day ;]

I know. It’s madness, Annie! ;)
lol…funny! That is insane. Maybe it was a “just in case” kinda thing? Also, I have to say that I grew up in KY in a county with mountains, and there were a lot of days that people in town would be like “Why is school cancelled today…there’s not much snow” but those of us who lived in the boonies, in the mountains? We knew exactly why it was cancelled…lol. But, I have to say that is a pathetic amount of snow, and I’m with you…it doesn’t even count! lol.

It is totally insane! We are near mountains, so maybe it really is bad somewhere way back in there, I just can’t figure out where that might be ;)
thanks for visiting, Crystal!
that looks like a southern snowday! we don’t get those here in Colorado!
see, you understand the real stuff, Beth :)
