Operation Baby Rescue: Day 2 from Guatemala

Yesterday morning I caught my first glimpse of Guatemala through a small airplane window.

Even from a distance, I could make out a thousand brightly colored, makeshift homes, squished and crammed on the leveled tops of mountains.

Before we’d even touched down, the tears came.  I wept over a place I did not know, over little faces I’d not yet met.  In one whirl of a moment, I was convinced without a doubt that entering in to the very things that wreck our hearts brings greater satisfaction than we could possibly know by staying on the safe side.

Today, we took a three and a half hour bus ride through winding mountain roads to the Hope of Life center in Zacapa.

Hope of Life is WorldHelp‘s on the ground partner in this area of rural Guatemala, where an estimated 80% of children are severely malnourished. It is here that, among many other initiatives, Operation Baby Rescue identifies critically ill children and brings them to the center for life-saving intervention and treatment.

We spent the day seeing first hand some of World Help’s work here at Hope of Life in Zacapa.

Yesterday, I looked out, burdened for a country I did not know and children I’d only read about.

Today, I see face to face.

For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 1 Corinthians 13:12
