Sneaky Spinach Smoothies

Despite my valiant efforts, my kids are super picky about their veggies.  It drives me absolutely nuts.  Are staples are baby carrots and sometimes cucumbers, but I seriously doubt their health benefits when dipped in globs of creamy ranch dressing.

Considering the circumstances, sometimes a mama’s gotta get tricky.

Enter my favorite kitchen gadget: the magic bullet.

This puppy was a hand-me-down from my angel of a friend Tami.  She is the kitchen gadget girl.  When she upgraded to fancier processing tools, she gave us her hardly-used bullet, and we were SO grateful!

Oh, and if you don’t have an angel of a friend who might give one to you, you can score the bullet at a decent price on amazon:

The kids love the colorful lids.  And I love the quick breakfast options.  We’re also big on having smoothies with dinner for a special treat, usually with english muffin pizzas.

And I love that I can get tricky with the veggies with the sweet little bullet.

I know it looks absolutely nasty, but for real, you cannot taste the spinach!

Since folks have different blender sizes, and since I’m not really very precise in my kitchen endeavors ;), I’m going to give you my not-so-technical recipe for this yummy (& sneaky) treat:

The Not-So-Technical Sneaky Spinach Smoothie:

Ingredients

- A big ol’ handful of fresh spinach leaves

- One banana

- A whole bunch of strawberries and/or other berries

- Ice. Lots of ice.

- A cup or two (or three?) of orange juice.

“Recipe” (the term used very loosely)

Ready for it? Ok, put in all that spinach first.  Add a small amount of the OJ and blend it up real good, so there’s no “pieces” that will send your kids running ;)

Next, add in everything else. Blend it up. [End recipe.]

Pour and enjoy!

Try it and let me know if you’re kids say a word about it being spinachy… promise you can’t taste it!

  1. I think I might try this. My brother & I picked up one of these on a shopping trip we { that I forced him to go on} went on. They’re so awesome & you can mix anything. I’m not one for veggies either so this is a great idea!

  2. We’ve been drinking green smoothies every day for several years. They are the main reason we love our blender.

We use milk kefir as our main liquid with a little added OJ concentrate for sweetness. Last month we pick over 70 pounds of blueberries to freeze enough for a full year of smoothies! We’re so thankful for en extra freezer we were able to get at the beginning of the summer!

  3. I thought you might be interested in a post I wrote recently on Feeding Picky Eaters :)

  7. Love the title!! I’ve been trying to be sneaky with my toddler but she’s a tough one!! While I’m a fan of the spinach smoothie, she doesn’t like banana :( You think it would work without it?? I always get excited when I find something healthy to give her, but then I cry inside because she never likes it! ;) I would love if you came and shared this {and your other great ideas I see over there on the sidebar} at my new link party!! http://www.hubbymademe.com/throwback-thursday-no-2/
