I need your advice.
Am I totally nuts?
My husband says yes….
Because of this:
We are on the hunt for a new sofa and I have admittedly bought into home decorating world’s craze of white slipcovered furniture. Living rooms like these have totally inspired all of my decorating:
Except that currently our couches are forest green and now all tore up from our crazy cute little adopted kitty.
A brand new couch hasn’t been in the budget, so I considered making slipcovers myself. Until I remembered that I’ve never sewed so much as a pillow, so maybe custom DIY slipcovered sofas weren’t the wisest starting point for trying my hand at the craft.
Next option: Craigslist. After months and months of scanning Craigslist for a decent couch and finding about 500 options from 1972 with gold fruit on them, we’re finally moving on to option number 3: a (cheap) new sofa from Ikea.
Hubby and I have planned a day trip this week to the nearest Ikea, which is, by the way, a solid two hours away from our home and worth every dime spent on gas for the road trip. Ektorp sofa, here we come. The color, however, is still up for grabs. The one thing I have in my favor is that the white sofa is BY FAR the most affordable new couch ever at $399. But choose another colored Ikea slipcover and the price hops up a whole lot, like a couple few hundred bucks. So, saving dollar signs might help me win the white sofa battle after all ;)
Melissa at the amazing Inspired Room wrote an excellent article on 5 Things to Consider Before You Choose White Slipcovers.
I think the most concerning consideration Melissa brings up is that people don’t want to sit on your white furniture. That would totally bum me out! We often have friends over and we host a life group at our home. I want folks to be super comfortable on the furniture and never worried about things being too pretty to sit on. Cause let’s be real, nothing in this house is too pretty to touch!
Andrea at Simple Organized Living decided to take the white Ektorp sofa plunge, despite virtual hate discouragement mail from readers urging her not to make such a huge mistake. She also shares her tips to keep a white couch clean in this super helpful article (in which she also states they don’t regret their pretty white sofa purchase one bit :)).
With Andrea’s experience, dare I ask??? I will anyway, since I value your opinion….
With one day left until the big purchase, what do you think about the white couch debate?
Come on, would you sit on my comfy white couch?
